LIFE&SUN Tirol

With the LIFE and SUN Tirol studies, we are launching two large-scale investigations to test interval fasting, exercise and stress reduction for their health-promoting effects (LIFE Tirol) and to optimize smoking cessation (SUN Tirol).

By 2040, we expect a dramatic increase in the population group over the age of 70 in Tyrol. Austria is one of the countries in Europe with the highest expenditure on health, but enjoy fewer ‘healthy life years’ compared with the EU average. Austrians live on average only about 57 years in complete health, a figure that is 16 years less than in Sweden, although both countries have similar expenditure. We want to promote an increase in healthy life years! Health should be promoted more before diseases develop, so that we can not only get older, but also spend the extra years of life healthy. Our focus is primarily on cancer prevention, but also on disease prevention in general. As part of two studies, the LIFE and SUN Tirol studies, we will therefore investigate the extent to which lifestyle changes or quitting smoking can affect health.

LIFE TIROL Study

The enrolment of subjects for the LIFE Tirol study has ended. If you are interested in our study in general or if you would like to pre-register for a future study, please contact us at info@eutops.at.

Details of the LIFE TIROL study

The LIFE Tirol study investigates the health-promoting effects of intermittent fasting, exercise, and stress reduction training and how well these measures are accepted by the Tyrolean population.

After detailed information and completion of a signed consent form, the participants are divided into one of 5 intervention groups:

  • Intermittent fasting
  • Exercise
  • Stress reduction, relaxation and resilience training
  • Intermittent fasting + exercise
  • Intermittent fasting + stress reduction, relaxation and resilience training

The classification is purely randomized and cannot be influenced. A total of 5 visits take place within 8 months at our study center in Hall in Tirol. At each visit, changes in quality of life and sleep, stress, blood values, blood pressure, epigenetic markers are among the factors to be examined. Only during the second visit will participants find out which group they have been assigned to. Then the participants start with the intervention and the Exercise group receives an additional sports medicine visit at the ISAG in Natters. If two interventions are planned, the second will only be added 2 months after the first.

WHAT DO WE OFFER THE PARTICIPANTS AND WHAT IS THEIR DIRECT BENEFIT?

  • Lifestyle change in diet and/or exercise and/or mental well-being
  • Professional advice from dieticians, training therapists and/or psychologists
  • Free medical examinations
  • Fitness tracker (wristwatch)
  • FORA device for ketosis measurement

WHAT CAN THE PARTICIPANTS EXPECT FROM THE STUDY?

  • Lifestyle change
    • Intermittent fasting
    • Exercise
    • Relaxation, stress reduction, and resilience training
  • 5 visits in Hall with sampling every 2 months
    • Health checks with blood sampling, ECG, blood pressure measurement, vascular elasticity measurement
    • Cheek swab
    • Stool and urine sampling
    • In women: cervical or vaginal smear
  • Additional visit to the ISAG (Institute for Sport-, Alpine Medicine and Health Tourism) in Natters for the Exercise group
  • Questionnaires: via the app, conveniently from home

WHAT IS THE VALUE OF THE STUDY FOR SOCIETY?

  • New insights into sustainable lifestyle changes for many more people
  • Individual prevention for certain diseases in the future

It is not easy to change habits sustainably, but the most important thing is not to give up – we will help you!

SUN TIROL Study

The enrolment of subjects for the SUN Tirol study has ended. If you are interested in our study in general or if you would like to pre-register for a future study, please contact us at info@eutops.at.

Details of the SUN TIROL study

Tobacco contains over 70 mutagens, which can change both the DNA sequence and extra information on the DNA ("epigenome"). The pollutants in tobacco lead, among other things, to cell aging, immunodeficiency, premature skin aging, lung diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer.

But: Smoking cessation can reduce the risk of these diseases at any age! So it's never too late to quit smoking.  Cell programs are misprogrammed by smoking – quitting smoking gradually leads to a normalization of these programs. Quitting smoking before the age of 40 reduces the risk of dying from a tobacco-related illness by about 90%, but quitting smoking beyond the age of 40 is still effective.

In the SUN Tirol study, half of the participants will receive regular feedback on the normalization of certain smoke-triggered parameters (epigenetic markers) after quitting smoking, the other half do not receive this information. In this way, we will investigate whether it is easier to quit smoking if regular feedback about the direct biological impact of the smoking is provided.

After detailed information and completion of a signed consent form, the participants will be divided into one of two different groups (feedback or no feedback). The classification is purely randomized and cannot be influenced.

A total of 5 visits take place within 8 months at our study center in Hall in Tirol. Changes in quality of life and sleep, stress, blood values, blood pressure, epigenetic markers are among the factors to be examined.

WHAT DO WE OFFER AND WHAT CAN THE PARTICIPANTS EXPECT IN THE STUDY?

  • Certified smoking cessation program of the Suchthilfe Tirol
  • A group session with an expert
  • Two more online sessions
  • Further support via Rauchfrei-Telefon Österreich
  • 5 visits in Hall with sampling every 2 months
    • Health checks with blood sampling, blood pressure measurement, vascular elasticity measurement
    • Cheek swab
    • Stool and urine sample
    • In women: cervical or vaginal swab
  • Questionnaires: via the app, conveniently from home

WHAT IS THE VALUE OF THE STUDY FOR SOCIETY?

  • New insights into possible improvements in smoking cessation for many more people
  • Individual precautions for certain diseases in the future

It is not easy to change habits sustainably, but the most important thing is not to give up – we will help you!
